1. What is Pharm.D ?

Doctor of Pharmacy also termed as “Pharm.D “. It is professional Pharmacy Doctoral programme. It is 6 years integrated postgraduate doctoral course which includes 1 year compulsory rotatory internship. To know more about Pharm.D, Click here…

2. How long does it take to earn a Pharm.D degree?
Six or 6 years. It includes 5 years of course work with hospital postings from 2nd year + 1 year compulsory internship. To know more about Pharm.D, Click here…
3. Is there any specific all India level entrance exam for Pharm.D?

Till now there is no specific All India  level entrance exam for Pharm.D.

Colleges and Universities conduct their own entrance exam or selection is based on merit level.

However for some government colleges, NEET or State level entrance exams marks are considered for admission to Pharm.D course.

4. What is the eligiblity criteria to join Pharm.D in India ?
Pharm.D Eligibility:
  • A pass in any of the following examinations –
    10+2 examination with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Biology, OR
    A pass in D. Pharm course from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act, OR
    • Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India as equivalent to any of the above examinations.
  • Provided that a student should complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.
  • There shall be reservation of seats for the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes in accordance with the instructions issued by the Central Government/State Government/Union Territory Administration from time to time.
5. How many seats are available in the Pharm.D program each year?
A total of 30 seats per college ( those colleges which are affiliated for Pharm.D) is approved by Pharmacy Council of India.
6. Is NEET required for admission in Pharm.D?

Yes NEET is required, but for government colleges only (which are a few in number). 

7. After D.Pharm, can i do Pharm.D, is there any lateral entry?

Yes of course, you can take admission in Pharm.D if you have completed your D.Pharm.

However, there is no lateral entry after D.Pharm to the course, you will have to take admission from the very 1st year of Pharm.D.

8. Can I prefix "Dr" to my name after completion of Pharm.D?

Yes. According to Pharm.D regulations 2008, and Notice with Ref.No.14-126/2012-PCI/46595-618  ,Dated: 16th Feburary  2012 a student who has completed his Pharm.D degree must be awarded with “Dr” prefix .

9. What if I already have a related graduate or professional degree ,and I wish to join Pharm.D?

Check for eligibility criteria in PharmD FAQs -4 . If you are eligible according to the criteria you will be able to get admission in Pharm.D PB or Pharm.D course from the beginning of 1st year.

10. Is Pharm.D a registrable qualification?

Yes , Pharm.D passed out students are registered in separate register by the council, according to the PCI Notice Dated : 19/06/2012

11. What is the average fees of Pharm.D course ?

Average fees ranges approx 1.5 lac to 3.0 lac per year in private and unaided colleges.

However the government colleges fees are relatively low and ranges around 50,000 per year.

14. Are Pharm.D doctors eligible to write prescription?

Asking for Indian scenario,then its absolutely no

*Pharm.D associations and even the Central Council has suggested MOHFW to allow Pharm.D for treatment for minor ailments and to allow follow up in case of chronic diseases etc,. Matter is under consideration till now.

However in some developed countries Pharm.D doctors are there to suggest or write prescription after the diagnosis portion is over by the physicians.

15. Which is the regulating body of Pharm.D in India?

Pharmacy Council Of India (PCI) solely regulates Pharm.D education in India.

**However, a small issue raised between AICTE and PCI for the regulation of the course curriculum, but the apex court turned his back to AICTE and allowed PCI to have the whole & sole responsibility of Pharm.D education.

16. Is Pharm.D considered a master's degree?

Yes , Pharm.D is considered a Master’s degree in India.

17. Is Pharm.D, the best alternative ?

4. Which is better Pharm.D or B.Pharm? (PharmD FAQs)

Candidates who wish to pursue carrier in Pharmacy have two major options to choose now-a-days ,i.e, Pharm.D or B.Pharm.

Both the options leads to great sectors in Pharmaceutical field. 

Pharm.D. is a Doctoral programme and the course on clinical pharmacy. It is an extremely detailed and well integrated course which makes a student professionally qualified to dispense and prepare medical drugs and interact directly with patients for better medical care and therapeutic outcomes. B.Pharm. however is related to drug manufacture as it includes subjects like quality assurance and control and also drug discovery; also marketing is a sector for graduate students.

If you are a student who wishes to work as a pharmacist in hospitals and healthcare clinics whether it is in your homeland or in countries abroad, then a Pharm.D. course would be better for you. 

Also, if you can dedicate continuously for 6 years for Pharm.D, then only approach towards it.

You can also pursue Fellowships like in Oncology , Cardiology ; and even can do Ph.D. after completing Pharm.D. if you are interested in doing further clinical research work.

However, if researching about new therapies and drugs interests you immensely and you look forward to work in pharmaceuticals, drugs and biotech industries then a B.Pharm. programme would be best suitable for you. You must follow it with M.Pharm. to excel in this field and may also do Ph.D. after that.

5. How is Pharm.D different from MBBS and BDS ? (PharmD FAQs)

Syllabus: 

While comparing the syllabus of Pharm.D and MBBS, it can be seen that the syllabus are almost same. 

Role:

Pharm.D focuses on lab investigations , diagnosis assurance and more on patient counselling, therapy of the disease ,i.e, treatment and management of Mild to Chronic diseases related to different medical departments and works on appropriate drug  adherence for patients, while MBBS/MD focuses more on clinical examination, Diagnosis and later on a basics of treatment & management too (In India). However, a BDS work is limited to the field related to dental science only.

6.Is Pharm.D equivalent to MBBS degree? (PharmD FAQs)

As of now (Dec 2020) , no research data or general statements have been issued by competant authorities about the equivalency of Pharm.D and MBBS. Pharm.D doctors are trained competitively for the treatment, management, patient counselling,etc. whereas MBBS doctors are trained equally towards the clinical examination, diagnosis and henceforth a basics of treatment.  Both the stream has its own value clinically working for the patient.

7. Is Pharm.D equivalent to MD degree in medical science? (PharmD FAQs)

Pharm.D is still struggling for its recognition at National level in the general public through Govt. whereas MBBS is well established and you can be more satisfied. No doubt Pharm.D will take a better place/status than other healthcare courses (can be seen from different Countries, as Pharm.D is not too old course everywhere), but practically it depends on Govt. that how much time will they take to give it a full fledged responsibility. Private sector has been massively accepting Pharm.D.

However, Go for MBBS only if you can pay the amount for MBBS+MD/MS, as you be prepare for the future as well that you can clear for govt. college further or not. A direct – forward  answer to this question is that if you are interested in clinical field of pharmacy then only opt for Pharm.D (PB) otherwise there is no need to be confused between the courses. This is because other courses are established compared to Pharm.D. However there is no doubt that Pharm.D will grow and will be one of the most recognised (can be seen from other countries as the course is not too old anywhere) but it totally depends on govt. nature that how long will it take.
